Scandinavian culture & Heritage at ssjc
Every year, we celebrate the Scandinavian tradition of Midsommar at SSJC. This is a week of our summer camp where the children are immersed in the tradition of celebrating the start of summer. The children, teachers and parents alike spend the week picking and collecting flowers and greenery, and together we make head wreaths, dress the midsummer pole, prepare Scandinavian flags and food for our picnic at the end of the week. We cannot forget the the many songs and accompanying dances the children learn, which we all share with our families and local community in Hamilton Park on Midsummer's Eve.
EASTER at SSJC
Every year we celebrate Scandinavian Easter at SSJC, filled with rosy cheeked Easter witches and a pot luck picnic with all of our families in Hamilton Park. While honoring our Scandinavian roots, we also infuse this celebration with a traditional American Easter Egg Hunt, filled with organic, vegan and non-edible treats for the children.
Lucia at SSJC is one of our most treasured celebrations of the year. We invite not only our families, but also our neighborhood schools and community to join us for this very special day. Lucia is a celebration of light during our darkest month, and the children practice the songs for months, in addition to baking traditional Scandinavian treats. In addition to celebrating with our community at St. Michael's Church of St. Jude, our children also bring this special tradition to our friends at The Atrium at Hamilton Park Senior Home.
